Highlighting Judy Bekker’s service to GERI – February 2021

It is a great joy to honor Judy Bekker of Cape Town, South Africa for her many years of service to GERI and GenderWorks. Judy continues to work with us as a senior consultant and training advisor, however, she is stepping down as our Director of Training in Africa, to make room for Desireé English to step into this position.

“I am deeply at home in wild places;” says Judy.
“I come from a line of adventurers.”

This captures Judy’s spirit and explains why she was drawn to GERI. Judy did her first GERI workshop 12 years ago, and joined the GERI facilitator training in 2010. She rapidly emerged as a key leader in the work, and co-facilitated GERI workshops all around South Africa, and in Kenya, the UK, India, and Boston. She also led or co-led numerous GERI professional training modules in South Africa and India, skillfully mentored the GERI trainees, and helped refine and develop the training curriculum. Judy testified in the Parliament of South Africa about the GERI work, and raised funds for GenderWorks programs in local townships.

We are deeply grateful to Judy, and we look forward to continuing to work with her, as we embrace the new training leadership to be provided by Desireé English.
